On the same day I had a guided hike in the Wicklow mountains just above Glendalough, I went to Meelmore Lodge in co.Down to start a weekend guided hike. The group was mixed as they were coming from Ireland and England.
We met on the Friday evening. On the Saturday, I brought them up to Slieve Donard passing by Slieve Commedagh and another summit which name may take too many kilobytes to type ! We were lucky with the weather as it has been rainning for days before hand ! Nevertheless, the wind was still very strong and especially at the top of Donard. We had few snow showers as well and light sunny spells.
We came down using part of the Mourne’s wall as a hand rail down to Donard’s Gap where we met Brandy Path and walked all the way back to Meelmore Lodge. The full hike took 6h20 and 17 km. In short, a nice day.
On day 2 or the Sunday ! We went from near Meelmore Lodge where we left one car up to Slieve Meelbeg, down to Shannagh Lough where we had our lunch on the beach ! (see photo) up to Carn Mountains where we met the Mourne’s wall and used it as a hand rail , down to the saddle and back to the second car park where we left the second car.
On the day, the weather was very nice with good sunny spells and some over night snow showers on some of the summit. The wind was moderate but with low temperatures near to freezing, the wind chill had some effects.
