CONNEMARA

CONNEMARA.

BENCHOONA – GARRAUN – ALTNAGAIGHERA

The hike starts from Carrickglass car park few miles away from Letterfrack on the sea side coast.

From there we take a small track on the way to Benchoona and at the end of the track we follow a small stream almost to the top at Benchoona. It isn’t a very high mountain but the views from it, are breath taking. In the near distance, we have  Hillary harbour  which runs  for 12km inland and Mweelrea mountain on the other side. The Atlantic ocean to the West , opens wide to the new world and to the East the Connemara mountains. The top and other mountains around have lots of small lakes which look like mirrors to the heavens. We then, go up to Garraun mountain at almost 600m high and down to Knappagh Lough and back to the car park.

Duration around 6 hours with breaks included.

Grade =  Medium to Hard

Terrain = Mostly off trails and challenging at times.

BINN BAHN.

Our walk start from where we leave our vehicles. We then, go up to Binn Charragh at 412m and follow the ridge for 2 and half kilometre to the top of the Connemara mountains at Binn Bahn 725m.

We then go down to Luggatarriff  638m to Maumnascalpa and up to Benbrack at 582m and down to the woodland and to the car park. On a clear day, the scenery is just breath taking, with all the colours and different shades of green from the landscape, blue from the sky , the sea and inland lakes !

Duration around 7 hours.

Grade = hard to challenging

Terrain = off trails most of the time and challenging.

MAUMTURK MOUNTAINS.

Our hike start from the woodland before Gowlaunlee Cross road up to summit 603m following the stream and to Letterbreckaun at 667 m. We then, go down to a mountain view of the surroundings including the 12 Bens at contour 500 m (from there, the view is absolutely stunnig) From there, we follow the ridge of the Maumturk Mountains walking pass different lakes and mountains and down to Maumahoge Lake and back to the starting point going up to summit 435 and down into the valley.

The Maumturk mountains are one of the most difficult range in Ireland. 

Duration around 7 hours breaks included.

Grade  = hard with one section of short scrambling.

Terrain = No trails.

MWEELREA.

The hike start from the Delphi resort centre following the recreation trail to Lough Lugaloughan up the rentrant and saddle and up to Mweelrea top at 814 m with a very scenic view of the area with the isolated beaches below , the Atlantic Ocean and the numerous inland lakes and the Connemara Mountains especially on a bright day. 

We then follow the horse shoe shape of the Mweelrea Mountains following the ridge with its different summits and back to Delphi resort centre.

Duration =  around 6h30 walk with breaks included.

Grade = Hard to challenging.

Terrain  = Forestry track at the start and trails and off trails most of the time.
