Women in Sports Guided Hike to Lough-Ouler Sept 19th

Looking for a fun and challenging outdoor activity in the Irish mountains and hills?

Participants will be taught by a professional mountaineering Ireland course director the basics of map reading skills, how to set the map, navigation tips and how to keep safe while hiking in the Irish mountains in poor visibility.

During the hike, you will be taught about Ireland during the last Ice Ages, the origin of the Irish peat, the first humans who transformed the Irish landscape, the origin of the boulders which were used to create field boundaries and used as building materials over the centuries to come. In addition to this you will learn about the flora and fauna, the origin of the landscape and historical events which took place in the area visited.  You also will learn about safe movement skills, basic navigation, basic map reading, equipment and safety considerations. 

Our Hikes are not only enjoyable but, educative too.

What gear do I need:

  • Wear comfortable clothing like – leggings, tracksuit bottoms, breathable T-Shirt and
    fleece & an extra warm layer.

  • Be ready for the rain and pack a rain jacket and rain
    trousers.

  • A hat and gloves to keep you safe from the wind even in Summer.

  • Wear good sturdy walking shoes or hillwalking boots with woolly or synthetic socks.

  • Have a backpack with water, sandwiches and snacks, coffee, tea or else.

  • Don’t forget to bring first aid kit with plaster and bandages, personal medicine,
    inhaler, EpiPen etc.

Please note: 48 hours cancellation notice must be given, otherwise Carlow Sports Partnership cannot guarantee a refund on ticket purchases.

Some level of fitness is essential.

Hiking Grade definition:

Easy = flat ground, forestry tracks – small tracks

Moderate = a small ascent of a various gradient – forestry tracks – small tracks – off trails

Difficult = a steeper ascent – small tracks – off trails with dense vegetation.

Challenging = Scrambling – off trails over steep ground and dense vegetation

 

This hike is: Easy-Moderate with a small difficult section

Hike Duration = 4h30

 

Please note this is a female only event, suitable for women and girls aged 16+.
