WICKLOW.

The Wicklow Mountains are the largest continuous upland area in the republic of Ireland.

They extend for almost 65 km from Dublin City to Co.Carlow to the South. The last major geological event to shape the Wicklow Mountains was during the last ice age 12000 years ago which left behind some corries lakes and U shape valleys. The most popular of such valleys being Glendalough with it monastry and  Glenmalure the longest glacial valley in Ireland and one of the longest in the UK. The highest peak is Lugnaquilla at 925 metres. Most of the Wicklow Mountains is home to the largest National Park in Ireland,covering 20.483 hectares.

LUGNAQUILLA.

At 925m Lugnaquilla the highest mountain of the Wicklow range south of Dublin and the second highest one in Ireland. The walk start from Drumgoff recreation car park and follow a wooden track through woodland for a mile then , follows a cliff track above Kelly’s Lough and up to Lugnaquilla. Coming back, we go down to the lake and back to the car park. Refreshment after the walk at the Lodge in Drumgoff.

Duration around 6 hours walk with breaks included.

Grade =  moderate to hard.

Terrain = Part trails and part off trails, wooden boards and forestry tracks.

GLENDALOUGH Upper Lake and the Spink.

The walk start from the car park at the upper lake, follows the track along the lake on the right, pass an old the miners village and up to the Spinc and back to the car park.

Duration around 4 hours walk with breaks included.

Grade = Easy to moderate.

Terrain = Mostly on tracks or wooden boards.

DERRYBAWN ridge to LUGDUFF and MULLACOR.

The hike start Shay Elliot car park on the military road, goes up to Derrybawn following the ridge down to the Spinc with the lovely view and panorama of the Glendalough and the Upper lake and back up through Mullacor and down to the car park.

Duration around 5h30 hours walk with breaks included.

Grade = Moderate.

Terrain =  mostly on tracks and a section on forestry tracks.

MULLAGHCLEEVAUN – BLACK HILL – STONY TOP.

The hike start from Ballynultagh Gap car park and goes up to Black Hill and up to Mullaghcleevaun which is at 850 m , the second summit of the Wicklow range. From the top , there is a very nice Panoramic view of the surroundings including Poulaphouca reservoir and Dublin in the distance and much nicer to experience at night during a clear day.

Duration  around 5 hours walk with breaks included.

Grade = moderate.

Terrain =  Tracks , trails and forestry tracks.

KELLY’S LOUGH – LOUGH MOUNTAIN – CARRAWAYSTICK.

The hike start from Drumgoff recreation car park near Glenmalure. Then we take the forestry track and a track made of boards which goes through a woodland which is very nice in Winter time and on track again to the lake. Very few people go there but the area is very interesting especially on a geological aspect as it is what is called a corrie lake carved in the rock bed by the ice during the last ice age. We still can see some of the moraine left behind. Interesting for everyone including students or schools. Then form the lake, we go up to  Lough Mountain and back down to Drumgoff car park.

Duration around 4h30 walk with breaks included.

Grade = Easy to Moderate.

Terrain = Forestry tracks, Wooden boards, trails, and off trails.
